The sound produced by this system is awesome, but that's where the accolades end with the DAV-FR1. If you attempt to load more than one disk into the player all will jam resulting in an expensive service call. I have owned this unit for four years and this has happened to me twice. The remote is totally worthless and broke one month after purchase. Sony has set this up so that no universal or other remote can be programmed to work the unit. You must purchase a replacement remote at a cost of $60.00 from Sony. Recently, the power switch has gone bad and the player can't be turned off either with the faulty remote or the faulty switch. It must be unplugged from the wall.



Would highly recommend staying away from this unit.

Pros:

-Easy set-up

Cons:

-The 5-disc changer is inconvenient. I don't even use it as a changer. You have to wait for the carrousel to spin inside, but there's no indication of when to insert the DVD.

-I hooked it up to my HDTV with component cables, but still had poor quality picture. This DVD Player may be great for regular TV's, but I don't recommend it for HDTV. If someone has this hooked up to an HD-ready TV with component cables and the picture is great, please let me know what I can do to get those results.

-Free ice cream melted before it arrived.





Ok, so the ice cream didn't come with the DVD player.

And, I ate the ice cream before I got home.

I first want to say, I love dealing with amazon, their customer service is excellent, and I have always loved Sony products. This surround system does not work well. The sound is absolutely great if you can get the main unit dvd player to function. I've had it hooked up for three weeks and have had several problems. First, the volume wouldn't increase or decrease, then the dvd player would freeze up and shut down automatically while playing a movie, now I have two discs in there and it won't eject them. Sony help says there is a malfunction in the unit and I now have to take it for repair to get my stuff out. I don't want another malfunctioning unit, I'm returning this as fast as I can. This Sony product is not worth the money or aggravation.

Outstanding picture quality. Very easy to use with a lot of features. Sound quality is very good (but not oustanding, that's why the 4 stars and a half) when compared to my YBA CD player. To fully take advantage of this excellent DVD player, do not hesitate to spend for audio and video cables (I use Wireworld interconnects for the Audio and XLO for the S-Video). The difference well designed cables can make is just AMAZING!

I purchased the SD-9000 when it was still selling at its regular (and high) price. It is a superb, industrial strength (heavy!) DVD player. Picture quality and sound are outstanding. The only downside was the price, which is now much lower. So, if you want a top quality unit, go for it at the reduced price.

Receiver had something loose rattling around inside. Opened and found broken piece off plastic housing. Did not effect perfomance, or so I thought. Some months later one of the hdmi inputs became intermittent. Not too happy with tiny center channel speaker. Replaced with a larger Sony speaker after a couple of weeks. Overall not very happy so I bought a Yamaha 5.1 receiver, also with hdmi pass through, and just kept the Sony speakers. Yamaha definitely sounds better.

it sounds great. it's not Bose, but it also doesn't COST as much as Bose. Great for a medium sized room. DVD player is a little clunky, and i'm not a fan of 5-disc players, but it's what came with it. Oh well.



I'm sure there are better out there, but if you're on a budget, this one is def a good contender.

I've had this system for about two months now and am pretty satisfied with it. Setting up the speakers was a pain in the ??? though. Connecting my HDTV,dish network box and DVD player(now a PanasonicBD35)was a little frustrating because I didn't realize you needed a optical digital cable to get any sound eventhough I connected my componets with HDMI cables. If your planning on getting a Blue Ray DVD player you might want to get a higher end receiver, so you can really get the theatre surrsound. Even with these little problems this system puts out good surround sound for a small area. The auto calculation feature works well for those of us who are not "audiophiles". So if you'er looking for system that puts out good sound for the price and can be easy to setup if you already know the pit falls then this is the system for you.

I purchased this player elsewhere (suprising I beat Amazon prices). Playback is good and clear. Unlike the box and specifications, this player does NOT have any built in decoders - Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio, or Dolby / DTS anything. The support referred to is the ability to send the encoded signal, via HDMI only, to a receiver with the decoders built in to perform the actual decoding of the signal. If your receiver does not have an HDMI port, or is "pass through" only, this will not work. Note that I am using optical audio and the signal processing supposedly only for HDMI seems to work with this option - contrary to the manual?? - basically PCM 96K, downsampled 48K, or re-encoded DTS.

Overall a good basic (kitchen, secondary use) player with very good 1080p picture. I consider the advertising / specification misleading / false advertising. If the box / specifications states, as this Sherwood Blu-Ray player does, it is DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, only to find out in the fine detail - in the manual, it simply forwards a signal is very deceptive. Shame on Sherwood. That's kind of like a UPS driver claiming a PhD because he delivered the documents to a graduate. WTH?

I buy and rent movies, usually now on Blu-Ray disc. Usually all I want to do is watch the movie and perhaps a few of the extras. For that mission a player such as the Sherwood BDP-5003 is perfect. It puts out an excellent video and audio signals on the HDMI connnector, and since my AVR can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD I'm all set. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

I purchased this item with very high hopes. About ten years ago I owned a NAD CD player and Amp was it was very smooth. Having had such a poor experience with Blu-Ray I purchased this unit hoping to breath new life into my old DVDs and to re-discover some of the quality that no longer exists in units sold at department stores or at electronic stores. When the unit arrived, it had a very impressive to look at and judging solely on that, it seemed a good buy. Unfortunately you cannot judge a book by it's cover. I did not realize that the unit did not have an HDMI output. This was my error for misreading the product information. I have the Epson 720 projector but I have both component and HDMI connections. I decided to test the unit against the Sony 700 DVD player. It is a decent player but only sells for $75. I was surprised an somewhat dismayed to find that the Sony's image was superior to that of the NAD. This was even true when comparing the conponent progressive scan outputs of both. How was the unit for sound? It would not play MP3 files as it claimed and had serious trouble with CDRs only playing about 10% of those tried. All of which would play in the Sony player. On commerical CDs it performed fine, but again the sound what well below what I remember and about the same quality as the Sony player when connected to a $200 Onkyo receiver. At times the NAD sound on CDs was so bright that it hurt to listen. For movies with a 5.1 soundtrack the NAD was superior to the sony/onkyo combination. Channel seperation was very strong and clean. Two channel sound recordings were very much the opposite. In the dolby surround II setting it was almost impossible to hear the center channel and the rear speakers which is only a reflection of the fronts, were actaully louder than the mains even though the speakers used for the fronts were considerably superior to the surrounds. In all the unit is not worth it's cost even at $ 499. It was returned after only one day.
